The Promenade des Anglais — 7 km of seafront, best enjoyed bag-free

Ranked among the world's most beautiful seafront promenades, the Promenade des Anglais stretches 7 kilometres along the Baie des Anges. Created in 1820 — funded by the English colony of Nice, which gave it its name — it has since become the symbolic heart of the Côte d'Azur. Pebble beaches, Art Nouveau palaces, a flat cycle path, ice cream terraces and Mediterranean sunsets: every metre is worth experiencing without a suitcase slowing you down.

From OHLALA Lockers at 29 rue Gounod, the seafront is 750m away — 11 minutes on foot heading south via Boulevard Victor Hugo and Place Masséna. There is no long walk, no tram needed: just 11 minutes and you're on the pebbles.

🚶 On foot (recommended): Rue Gounod → Boulevard Victor Hugo → Place Masséna → seafront. Flat, straight, 11 minutes.
🚋 By tram T1: Board at Jean Médecin stop (3 min walk), direction Airport. Get off at Masséna — 2 minutes' walk from the sea. Total: ~8 minutes door to shore.

The beaches of Nice — what you need to know

The beaches along the Promenade are pebble beaches — a surprise for first-time visitors, but a feature that makes the sea exceptionally clear. The limestone seabed produces the characteristic turquoise colour of the Baie des Anges. In summer the Mediterranean reaches 24–25°C.

Public beaches are free and accessible all along the 4 km stretch between Place Masséna and the airport. The Plage de la Réserve, east of the port, and the Coco Beach area are local favourites: quieter, clearer water, less tourist traffic. Private beach clubs (€18–25 per person in high season) offer sunbeds, parasols, showers, changing rooms and restaurant service directly on the shore — brands like Le Ruhl Plage, Hi Beach and Le Castel Plage are established options.

Practical tip: beaches are most crowded between 10am and 6pm in July and August. Go before 9am or after 5pm for the same sea with a fraction of the crowd — and better light for photos.

Landmarks along the Promenade

  • Hôtel Negresco (1913) — the iconic pink dome is Nice's most recognisable building. The hotel's lobby and corridors are lined with artworks from every period; you can walk in as a visitor without staying. A Michelin-starred restaurant inside.
  • Musée Masséna — a Belle Époque villa (1901) set in gardens directly facing the sea. The museum traces the history of Nice and the Côte d'Azur from Napoleon's era to the 20th century. Free entry.
  • Quai des États-Unis — the eastern extension of the Promenade, quieter and more local, lined with seafood restaurants and galleries. Leads directly to Old Nice (Vieux-Nice).
  • Colline du Château viewpoint — at the eastern end of the Promenade, a free lift or 15 minutes of steps takes you 92m above the seafront for the best panoramic view over the Baie des Anges.
  • Cycle path — a dedicated lane runs the entire length of the Promenade. The city's Vélo Bleu bike-share scheme has stations every few hundred metres.

Best time to visit the Promenade

Early morning (7–9am) is magical: the light is golden, the air is cool and the Promenade is almost empty except for runners and locals. The sea is calm. Sunset (from 8pm in summer) draws everyone out for the spectacle of the sun dropping behind the Esterel mountains — one of the most filmed views on the entire Riviera.

In July and August, midday on the Promenade is hot and crowded. Plan your beach time early or late, and use the middle of the day for Old Nice, museums or a long lunch in the shade.
