One day in Nice — it sounds tight, but the city is surprisingly compact and wonderfully walkable once you've set your bags down. Whether you're arriving by train, plane or cruise ship, this is our recommended plan for making the most of every hour.
Morning: Cours Saleya Market and Old Nice (9am–12pm)
Start early at Cours Saleya market (open every day except Monday from 7am). The flower stalls, local produce and street food make for one of the most atmospheric morning markets in France. Try the socca — a warm chickpea pancake eaten straight from the vendor. Wander through Old Nice's colourful baroque streets: rue Droite, rue du Marché, Place Rossetti with its cathedral and Fenocchio ice cream shop. The whole area is best experienced on foot, which means bags must be stored first.
Midday: Colline du Château (12pm–1:30pm)
From Old Nice, it's a short walk to the free lift that takes you up to Colline du Château. The panoramic view from the top encompasses the Baie des Anges, the port, the rooftops of Old Nice and, on clear days, the mountains inland. Allow 45 minutes at the top. Bring water — there's a waterfall and picnic areas.
Afternoon: Promenade des Anglais (2pm–5pm)
Walk down from the château hill to the sea and join the Promenade des Anglais. The famous 7km seafront promenade is flanked by pebble beaches, cafés and iconic landmarks including the Hôtel Negresco. Rent a bike (Vélo Bleu stations dotted along the route), take a dip, or simply sit on the pebbles and watch the Mediterranean. In the late afternoon, the light on the Baie des Anges is extraordinary.
Evening: Nice-Ville Station District (5pm onwards)
The Notre Dame and Jean Médecin districts come alive in the early evening. If you haven't already collected your bags from OHLALA Lockers, now is a good time. The tram connects you to the station in minutes for your onward journey. Or extend the day with dinner in a local restaurant — try pissaladière or a proper pan bagnat before heading off.
Is one day enough to see Nice?
One day is enough to cover the main highlights: Old Nice, Cours Saleya, Colline du Château and the Promenade des Anglais. For museums (MAMAC, Musée Matisse, Musée Chagall), plan a second day.
What is the best way to get around Nice?
The tram (T1 and T2) is excellent and covers most tourist areas. Many attractions are also walkable. Avoid taxis in the city centre — trams and walking are faster and cheaper.
Where can I store my bags for a full day in Nice?
OHLALA Lockers in the Notre Dame district offers automatic 24/7 storage with lockers in sizes S, M and XL. It's 8 minutes' walk from Nice-Ville station and accessible by tram (Jean Médecin stop). Book in advance for the best availability.
